CultureTrack. A case for the protection of historical monuments
10:00 - 18:00

Monuments are witnesses to the past stories of their inhabitants and builders. Their building fabric is full of evidence. Historical scars, additions and further developments tell a lot about a building and its inhabitants. The monument itself can become a victim. Open Monument Day 2022 explores the question of what insights and evidence can be gained by examining the original monument substance. What traces have been left by human activity over the centuries and through many layers of time? What "deeds" were committed in and on the building? And what conclusions does monument conservation draw from this? Under the motto "KulturSpur. A Case for Monument Preservation", the Open Monument Day invites visitors to go in search of clues and find out history and stories at the monument.

At the end of the 19th century, the long building on Bautzner Straße housed a paper and cardboard factory. In 1932, the building was converted into the tenement "Heidehof". After the end of the Second World War, the Soviet occupation forces confiscated the area and made it available to their security agencies. Finally, the former "Heidehof" was part of the building complex on Bautzner Straße, which housed the district administration of the State Security from 1953 to 1990.

In the cellar, there are still traces of the former factory and the residential building, but also of the Soviet period and the use by the GDR secret service.

The memorial awaits its guests again with an informative and entertaining programme:

Short tours with contemporary witnesses

At the authentic site, visitors can experience what political imprisonment meant in the GDR. On a tour of the only original Stasi prison in Saxony, visitors can see how the state's repressive apparatus tried to eliminate its political opponents. The tour leads through the Soviet detention cellar, the representative ceremonial hall and into the office of the Dresden Stasi chief.

Start: 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00. Duration 45 minutes
